The atlas, published 50 years ago, contains instructions and tables for the morphological identification of archaeological animal and human bones. It is considered a standard work for archaeozoological research and is still in use today by numerous researchers, teachers and students.

Elisabeth Schmid (1912-1994) was working as a prehistorian, geologist, palaeontologist and archaeozoologist. She taught and researched at the universities of Freiburg i.B. (Germany) and Basel (Switzerland). In 1972 she was appointed full professor of prehistory and protohistory at the University of Basel.
