It has become clear that ethnic expressions in cemeteries are not only difficult to identify, but that we are also dealing with a complex phenomenon that is active on different levels.

In order to better understand the ways in which such different forms of ethnicity can be reflected in the archaeology record, the rowgrave cemetery of Altenerding in Bavaria is worth a reappraisal.
