For the issue of early state expansion we need a wide spectrum of case studies, and we need to test various explanatory models on these, to be able to question the 'truths' and to construct new general hypotheses for future work in the field. In this paper a small contribution is given on the basis of many years of research in the Swedish historical province of Hälsingland, now part of Gävleborg county and situated at the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia, around three driving hours north of Stockholm.
