With the introduction of cross-timbering around 1000 AD in Norway, a several thousand year old building tradition was broken. Because of this totally new building technique, introduced from the east, the traditional long-house with its manifold functions was divided up. This happened at a time of numerous changes in the society, among them the founding of new towns which served as centres for the spread of innovations.
