My paper concerns the most significant example of innovation and interaction experienced by the northern Europeans in the early Middle Ages, namely their conversion to Christianity. Conversion changed the ideology, the politics and the economics of communities, often permanently. It altered boundaries, burial rites and the relations between the sexes. It set the social pattern for the entire Middle Ages and beyond.
