Nature or Culture? Constructional variation in Scandinavian medieval urban timber buildings

Medieval buildings should be divided not into two social groups, one stone the other timber, but (at least) three - the timber buildings of the general populace; those of the elite; and the stone- or brick-built buildings of the elite. This should form the basis of future studies.
